Is that true, or is that an historical myth? If it is true, could the incident at Yuma have had anything to do with it?

In school, we were taught that the engineers made an error in establishing the boundary at the point that is now the southwest corner of Arizona, that the boundary was mistakenly run to the northeast, and that, as a result, Arizona does not have “oceanfront property” as it should have had. I work for the International Boundary and Water Commission as an engineer and I am the Commission's unoffical historian. Mr. Wipple served the United States well. After the Yuma incident with the little girl, He signs an important treaty document establishing the southern boundary of the United States with Mexico as an "Acting Treaty Officer". After his service as a member of the Commission and during the Civil War he is killed by a sniper of the Confederacy. His funeral was attended by President Lincoln.

I loved the story, I have read it before, I believe the food he shared with her was a watermelon.
