Caring for Creepy Crawlers in Apache Junction
APACHE JUNCTION — Creepy crawly things don’t bother Zach Ziesing. He just lets them creep and crawl down his arms and across his hands and he doesn’t even flinch or worry about warts. Ziesing is the proprietor of the Superstition Serpentarium at Goldfield Ghost Town, a tourist attraction east of Apache Junction. He is therefore the caretaker of 90 different species of creatures that crawl and slither and slime and repel, from gila monsters to tarantulas to rattlesnakes.
Although Ziesing handles many of his charges, he warns visitors not to try it at home because he’s a professional and they probably aren’t, particularly those high school girls who often stop by and shatter the air with high-pitched screams when he retrieves a 9-inch multi-legged creature from its cage.
The site is at 4650 North Mammoth Mine Road on Route 88 northeast of Apache Junction.
