“The Thing” Gets a New Home, Alien Companions
The Thing, a mysterious tourist attraction 17 miles east of Benson, has a new home! Bowlin Travel Centers, which owns the property, recently completed extensive renovations, upgrading the popular museum that draws travelers from far and wide. The Thing is now more than a place to stop for a quick snack – it’s a destination.
The museum is three times the size of the old facility – 30,000 square feet to be exact. The new space features numerous exciting exhibits that take visitors on an alternative journey through Earth’s history, showing how aliens have been there through it all, from the age of the dinosaurs to modern times. Of course, The Thing plays a vital role, but you’ll have to see for yourself.
If you visited the old museum, you’ll likely see some familiar relics. A few of the old cars were refurbished and incorporated into new exhibits. You will also find a covered wagon, buggies and a buckboard.
In addition to the fully climate-controlled museum, visitors can shop for Native American jewelry and a number of other unique Southwestern items in the expanded gift shop. The revamp also included a facelift to the on-site Dairy Queen if you’re in need of a snack.
The new facility opens August 31. Tickets cost $5 for individuals or $10 for families. Find it at 2631 N. Johnson Rd., Benson, AZ 85602
The Thing is most likely an ancient Peruvian mummy, judging from her clothing.
